The Calgary Stampede is an annual event held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada that welcomes more than 1.2 million visitors a year from around the world. Also known as the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, this unique 10-day event blends the very best in Western Canadian culture and contemporary entertainment. Key highlights include the Stampede Rodeo and chuckwagon races, the Midway, and a variety of musical concerts and venues featuring some of the world’s most popular performers.
The caliber of a rodeo comes down to two things: the skill of the competitors and the quality of the horses, bulls, and steers. The Stampede Rodeo features the world’s best competitors and animals. Every afternoon at 1:30 PM, cowboys, and cowgirls face off in a furious display of skill and grit, with every win building towards Showdown Sunday—the World’s Largest Outdoor Rodeo.
History
In 1886 the Calgary District and Agricultural Society held the first Exhibition. There was little more to Calgary than a CPR station, a North West Mounted Police post, and about 1000 people. The Exhibition was an opportunity to share knowledge about practicing agriculture in the West, have fun and showcase the best of the West. Though there were a few bumps in the road, the Exhibition became an annual event and attendance continued to grow.
